FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham on Wednesday released a bid notice for a project to remove more than 100 trees at the Edgell Grove Cemetery. Tree inspectors discovered in recent months that about 131 trees at the municipally-owned cemetery are not growing leaves, and so have to be removed, Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Thomas Begin said. Framingham initially sought bids to remove 129 trees over the summer, but that contract was never awarded, Begin said. The Edgell Grove Cemetery dates to 1848, a period when cemeteries in America were built to resemble public parks. The cemetery features winding paths and dirt roads with a chapel and mausoleum at the center — with hundreds of mature trees towering above.
