Nassau Sees Less Than 1,000 COVID Cases For First Time In January

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — For the first time this month, Nassau County has recorded less than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a day, and has now seen two consecutive days of fewer than 1,000 positive cases. The last time Nassau had less than 1,000 new cases was Dec. 28. Since then, the county has seen more than 1,000 new cases each day, topping out at 1,858 new cases on Jan. 14. The number of deaths the county is seeing from the coronavirus is still high, though. Deaths come down about two weeks after cases. "By and large our residents, businesses and schools have been doing the right thing — wearing masks, social distancing and avoiding unsafe gatherings," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement. "But we need to keep it up. We must stay vigilant and continue using common sense so we can keep up this progress." The first day of lower cases was Jan. 25, which recorded 942 new positives. Jan. 26 saw 977 new cases, according to data from the state. January has still been the worst month for new coronavirus infections, though. Nassau County has seen 34,659 new cases this month — the most ever. January makes up 28 percent of the county's 124,129 total cases. There have also been 247 deaths this month, which is the third-worst. April and May of 2020 both saw more deaths, but fewer positive cases. So far, 2,648 Nassau residents have died of the virus since the first cases was recorded on March 5.
