Description
I sat down
And tried to write
A poem about
The garden
I glimpsed behind
Your eyes
Only a moment
Maybe half a second
Maybe less
Like none I’ve
Seen in five cities
Or a lover I’d planned
To elope with
You tightened
Your mouth
Into a professional
Smile and thanked
Me for holding
The door
But that flash
In your eyes
Made me
Look away
For fear of blushing
At the wrong place
And time
Not brushing
Knees in some bar
Sipping neat whiskey
And glancing sidelong
And letting
Your hand graze mine
“Mhm”
I replied
The wrong answer
The correct response
Is usually C
And a pheasant
Sings at dawn
Like the rest
If she’s dodged
What hunts her
And I would
Meet you anywhere
Any time, just
To feel your hot
Breath on me
Just once
For maybe half a second
Maybe less
