SALEM, MA — Today is Tuesday, Jan. 26. These are the stories Patch is covering on the North Shore and across Massachusetts. Salem State University will host a regional coronavirus vaccination day for North Shore residents eligible in phase 1 of the state's vaccination protocol on Thursday. Eligible residents of Danvers, Beverly, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott can register for the vaccination at the university's South Campus Gym on Harrison Road on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. Pre-registration is required and proof of eligibility is required when people arrive at the site. Eligibility for phase 1 was expanded last week to include all home health care workers and other caregivers. A full list of those eligible under phase 1 can be found here. Read the full story here. Also on the North Shore Satanic Temple Sues City Of Boston Over Chance To Lead Prayer The Salem-based Satanic Temple has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Boston, alleging that the city council has unfairly prevented the group from reciting a pre-meeting prayer. City councilors are responsible for inviting religious leaders to say a prayer before meetings—not only has the council not invited the Temple, but it hasn't granted requests to read a prayer at the meeting, the suit says. "This really is a much bigger issue than I think people recognize on the face of it," said Lucien Greaves, founder of the Satanic Temple, in an interview with Patch. "I think some people see these kinds of disputes that we fight and think that they're petty and prankster-ish. But we don't feel that way at all." Beverly Mayor: Hopeful Coronavirus Signs After A Hard January There are "hopeful" signs to conclude a very difficult January battling the coronavirus in the city. Mayor Mike Cahill said in a letter to the community that the virus killed 25 residents in the first 25 days of the month, but that "after a significant spike in people hospitalized locally" because of the virus after the holidays, positive cases have trended downward for the past two weeks. Salem Gets Charge Of Out $76K State Grant, National Grid Funds Salem will be getting a charge out of a state grant that will go toward six electric vehicle stations, upgrades to city buildings and new replacement hybrid police cruisers. The $76,872 in "Green Communities" grants will fund six new ChargePoint stations with three at Salem High School's Salerno Automotive Technical Center and three at Forest River Park, which are all expected to be operational by the end of the month. Across Massachusetts Teachers Blast Updates To Massachusetts Vaccination Plan Unions representing teachers say the Baker administration's updated plan for vaccinating Massachusetts residents against the coronavirus is stalling a safe return to in-person learning. "The Baker administration must do a better job of balancing the needs of people at risk because of age and other factors with recognizing that people working with students need to be vaccinated," Massachusetts Teachers Association President Merrie Najimy said in a statement. "We had not opposed the original prioritization list because it had a rational basis and promised to deliver vaccines to educators in February. "Now, those hopes may be dashed." Boston Marathon Officials Set Date For 2021 Marathon The Boston Athletic Association said Monday that if road races are allowed to take place as part of the Massachusetts reopening plan by October, the 125th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, Oct. 11. "We announce the 2021 Boston Marathon date with a cautious optimism, understanding full well that we will continue to be guided by science and our continued collaborative work with local, city, state, and public health officials," said President and C.E.O. of the B.A.A. Tom Grilk in a statement. Widespread Internet Outages Hit Northeast U.S. Internet users across the northeast U.S. reported widespread outages Tuesday. In an emailed statement 90 minutes after the outage was first reported, Verizon said it was working on the problem hurting Fios service "throughout the Northeast corridor" and that some service had already been restored. Woman Posed As Nurse To Rob Elderly Stoughton Woman's Home: PD A Boston woman dressed up as an at-home nurse to steal from an 88-year-old Stoughton woman's home twice over the summer, according to prosecutors. When the burglaries occurred in July and August, Stoughton police determined the suspect was a woman who entered the home under false pretenses. Police said the woman went to great lengths to conceal her identity, but she had a very specific tattoo that was seen on home security footage.
