Press release from the City of Des Moines: January 25, 2021 DES MOINES, IOWA – Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 – Public Works Director Jonathan Gano knows Mother Nature is about to deliver the heaviest snowstorm in years. The National Weather Service is forecasting eight to 14 inches for the Des Moines metro, which Gano says 'is almost double' what is normally expected for a big central Iowa snowstorm. "Our priority is always the 750 miles of our snow route system. It will take awhile for the snowplows to get the snow route system under control," Gano said. "We'll be working those routes continuously, running laps that take one-and-a-half to three hours to make one full pass." Gano asked for residents to have patience, since snowplows likely won't hit residential side streets until tomorrow afternoon or evening. "It might not be until Wednesday early morning before a complete pass is made through all the neighborhood streets," he added. Des Moines Public Works is teaming up with crews from Des Moines Parks and Recreation and the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority to tackle the biggest snowstorm of the season. Des Moines residents can follow updates and stay prepared for winter weather all season long at DMSnow.org or by following @DMDPW on Twitter and Des Moines Public Works on Facebook. Residents may also opt in to receive text alerts with parking restrictions by texting DMSNOW to 96000, or DMODDSNOW to 96000 for Odd/Even neighborhoods.
