Lake County Center for Independent Living is a referral source for persons with disabilities who are looking to hire a personal assistant as such we are not a placement agency nor do we guarantee employment. A personal assistant is someone who assist a person with a disability with daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning in their homes. As a personal assistant you work directly for the person with a disability and the schedule and tasks are unique to that person's needs. Qualities that make for a good personal assistant include: ability to accept responsibility, willingness to work closely with others, ability to relate well to others, willingness to learn the job well, ability to look beyond someone's disability, maintain clean personal habits, must be highly reliable, must respect confidentiality and must be at least 16years of age and have work permit and/or legally permitted to work in United States. No education or certification requirements. To be placed on our referral list you need to attend a 2-hour Orientation training (currently ZOOM meeting based) there is no cost to attend the training. Must have reliable transportation (as you will be working in people’s homes). Must have an interest in assisting others in maintaining their independence in the community. Good interpersonal Communication skills, listening skills. Be dependable and self-motivated. Be able to adapt to different personalities and working with people who have different abilities.
