SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department is offering using a hybrid model for an emergency preparedness course. The Community Emergency Response Team 'CERT' Training will feature online courses, eight virtual "office hours" and one in-person "skills day." The online classes can be taken in English or Spanish at any time. The virtual office hours will be held on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on consecutive weeks from Feb. 4 to March 25. CERT is described by the San Mateo Consolidate Fire Department as "a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference." The CERT program will include training in basic disaster preparedness including use of a fire extinguisher, disaster medical care, first aid training, search and rescue techniques, communicating through radios and neighborhood team building.
