ELMHURST, IL — For the second week in a row, Elmhurst experienced another low in new coronavirus cases since the surge that began in early October. As of Sunday, the city saw 89 new coronavirus cases in the last week, or a 2.6 percent increase, for a total of 3,461. That is down from the previous week's 3.2 percent. Two weeks before was 5.6 percent. Since early October, the number of local coronavirus cases has more than tripled in Elmhurst. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning was at 57, up two from a week before. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. Elmhurst makes up 5.2 percent of the county's population and 5.2 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 74 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 63.4 in La Grange Park, 63.9 in Darien, 65.9 in Western Springs, 68.5 in Hinsdale, 72.7 in DuPage County, 76.9 in Clarendon Hills, 80.4 in suburban Cook County, 83.8 in Burr Ridge and 89.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,101,819, up 3.5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 18,750 state residents. Nationally, 24.9 million people have caught the virus, up 5.2 percent from the week before. A total of 416,010 people have died from the virus in the United States. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 38 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That was 10 fewer than a week ago. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 156 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by one from a week ago. Since March, 1,363 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
