ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley gave the public an idea last week about how often it can get to repaving roads. During his "State of Our City" address, Morley noted the city suspended its road paving program last March when the pandemic hit. Usually, he said, the city paves anywhere from three to seven miles of road a year. "The city has about 100 miles of roads, and they run on a 20-year cycle," Morley said. "So if you do the math, we have to replace about five miles worth of roads a year. Now that varies based upon weather and based on our budget." When the city gets less money, road repaving is one of the first things that get hit, he said. "That's our rubber band in the budget. That is the thing that has the most flexibility when we're in trouble," the mayor said. Because the city eliminated its paving program last year, it increased patching of roads, Morley said. Given that the city took a year off, it is setting its sights high in 2021. "We hope to get in eight new miles of road this year," the mayor said.
