ROYAL OAK, MI — A Royal Oak business has been cited for violating Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules implemented during the coronavirus pandemic, state officials said Friday. United Resin Corporation was cited but not fined for not developing a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan, state officials said. The citation was issued following an inspection that was initiated in response to an employee complaint, according to officials. Under MIOSHA's Emergency Rules, businesses that involve in-person work are required to have a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan and provide thorough training to their employees that covers the proper use of personal protection equipment and steps workers must take to notify the business or operation of any symptoms of COVID-19 or a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. An emergency rule citation can carry a fine of up to $7,000, officials said. The state said it recently cited 10 businesses in the state for failing to implement necessary precautions to protect employees from contracting COVID-19. Deficiencies included a lack of health screenings, face coverings, employee training and overall preparedness plans. Cited businesses have 15 working days from receipt of the MIOSHA citations to contest the violations and penalties, according to the state. The state on Thursday surpassed 14,000 deaths attributed to the coronavirus, reporting 148 more COVID-19 deaths. Michigan also reported 2,165 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Michigan to 544,311. More than 442,000 people in Michigan have recovered from the coronavirus, state health officials reported on Saturday.
