Wixom Man Charged In Hockey Stick Attack At Capitol Denied Bond

DETROIT — An Oakland County man struck police at least 10 times with a hockey stick during a Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and was "among the most violent of all participants," according to federal documents filed Sunday by U.S. attorneys who argued the man should remain jailed ahead of future court hearings. Michael Foy, 30, of Wixom, was denied bond Monday during a court appearance in the U.S. District Court in Detroit. He is charged with knowingly entering a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; obstruction of law enforcement; forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating or interfering with an officer of the U.S.; and aiding, abetting and obstructing any official proceeding of Congress. The most severe of the charges is a 20-year felony. Foy, a former marine, was arrested Thursday. U.S. Attorneys said in federal documents that he first became a person of interest when the FBI received a trip through social media identifying him as the person responsible for killing a police officer, documents said. The tipster said he hit the officer in the head with a hockey stick. Related: Oakland Co. Man Charged In Hockey Stick Attack At Capitol The FBI Thursday said it was not able to corroborate the claim and found "no evidence that the suspect killed a police officer." However, FBI investigators identified Foy from several photos that appeared to place him inside and outside the U.S. Capitol building. In federal court documents filed Sunday by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hank Moon, Foy "swung and appears to have struck officers with his hockey stick no fewer than 10 times." After swinging at the officers, prosecutors wrote, Foy fell into the crowd. "But he was far from finished," Moon wrote. "He stayed near the doors to the Capitol building. A few minutes later, Foy appears to have rallied his fellow rioters, again taking a leadership role in the chaos." Prosecutors wrote that after the assaults, Foy entered the Capitol building through a broken window. Foy is the second person from Michigan charged federally in connection with the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol. Karl Dresch, 40, of Calumet was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of knowingly entering or remaining in restricted grounds without lawful authority, impeding or disrupting official functions, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, according to federal documents.
