Description

A safe, socially distant opportunity to learn more about beer while drinking comfortably in your own home! This class will explore the tasting process we go through when evaluating a beer. I know, some of you might be like, "What's to evaluate? If it tastes good, I drink it!" And while there's nothing wrong with that, to fully appreciate a beer you want to learn to pay attention to the primary elements of the drinking experience: aroma, appearance, taste, mouthfeel, and the overall impression it leaves. You don't need to have aspirations to become a certified beer judge to benefit from taking a more observant approach to drinking beer. As you begin to pay more attention to the beers you drink, you will start to understand which flavors you like, what is responsible for those flavors, and ultimately what beer styles you prefer. In this class, you will learn basic vocabulary for discussing beer flavors and the process for evaluating a beer's color, aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. We will put it all together at the end by tasting some beers together (virtually!) and walking through a beer evaluation sheet to practice our skills. You will need some beers on hand for the class. For those that register, we will offer a discounted 4-pack that will work perfectly. If you are joining from somewhere outside of Jax or you have another great bottle shop in your neighborhood, you will need a shopping list. So here it is: 1. Pale Lager: styles such as American Lager, Czech Pilsner, or German Pilsner. You could also get by with American Blonde or Kolsch. 2. Wheat Ale: styles such as German Hefeweizen, Belgian Witbier, or American Wheat. 3. American Pale Ale or IPA: this can be any version of the style including traditional pale ales, West Coast IPA, New England IPA, and Double IPA. 4. Dark Ale: styles such as an American Porter, American Stout, Milk Stout, Dry Irish Stout, or American Imperial Stout. This class will be held using Zoom. Once you register, you will receive information on how to join the meeting including the passcode needed to join. Class is led by Kelly Pickard, Certified Cicerone®
