STRATFORD, CT (January2021) – Sterling House Community Center was the recent recipient of a $9,862.63 grant from United Illuminating/Southern Connecticut Gas/Connecticut Natural Gas companies, subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc., as part of the state of Connecticut's 2020 Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) tax credit program. Sterling House is using the NAA funding on energy efficiency improvements and projects on its 134-year-old main agency home located at 2283 Main St., Stratford. In total, United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG) and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) recently distributed more than $441,500 in grants to 59 organizations in 2020 including Sterling House. All are aimed at helping community and neighborhood organizations across the state improve energy efficiency and reduce their energy costs. Since 2010, UI, SCG and CNG has awarded $3.8 million in grants through the NAA Program, which offers a corporate tax credit to encourage businesses to provide financial support to qualified local nonprofit organizations. "As we mark the New Year in 2021 during these unprecedented times, we are mindful of the many people in our communities who are suffering as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic – and of the important roles nonprofit organizations play in supporting them," said Frank Reynolds, president of UI, SCG and CNG. "This program allows us to help our nonprofit partners achieve ongoing energy savings, allowing our partners to focus their resources on the critical programs and services that they provide." Commenting on the generous NAA award, Sterling House Executive Director Amanda Meeson said, "We are so grateful to AVANGRID and its subsidiary companies for providing us with much needed dollars to help us continue to bring our 134-year-old Sterling House into the 21st century. "We have several energy efficiency related projects ongoing including our kitchen renovation, HVAC upgrades and ongoing roof and other energy related projects - all in our effort to modernize and preserve our beloved agency home. NAA dollars are a critical financial piece helping us make this happen." Meeson added, "These efficiency updates will come back to us in actual energy cost savings going forward, adding to the value of the original grant benefit."
