ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County Public Schools extended the period that families have to indicate whether their students will take hybrid classes when they become available. The response form is now due by 5 p.m. Sunday. AACPS announced this one-week extension in a Tuesday press release. Students who do not fill out the form at aacps.org/spring2021survey will continue with virtual learning by default. The survey also asks families about their transportation and teacher preferences. Anybody who wants to change their previous choices should head back to the form and enter the confirmation number emailed to the primary contact. The Anne Arundel County Board of Education is now targeting a March 1 start to hybrid classes. School officials previously hoped for a Feb. 2 start. The board approved the new plan on Jan. 15, but there's a catch. The vote does not bind the school system to its targeted start date. If the county's coronavirus metrics are still concerning, the board could further delay hybrid classes. Board members urged Superintendent George Arlotto to bring back small groups of priority students even sooner. This would include students with special needs, English language learners and those at the county's Centers of Applied Technology. The school board also directed Arlotto to: Present a timeline explaining how the reopening plan will be implementedGive an update on the county's reopening status and coronavirus metrics by Feb. 17Identify students who are struggling with online classes so the county can find solutions To catch up on the latest coronavirus infection and vaccination trends in Anne Arundel County, read Patch's latest update.
