HOBOKEN, NJ – Hoboken residents are invited to share their input on the community draft Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and injuries by 2030. Community input will be welcome until Wednesday and can be submitted at http://www.vzhoboken.com/public-input. The Vision Zero program is based on five principles: that traffic deaths and injuries are preventable; human life and health are prioritized within all aspects of the transportation system; human error is inevitable and transportation systems should be forgiving; safety work should focus on systems-level change above influencing individual behavior; and speed is recognized as the fundamental factor in crash severity. According to city officials, while Hoboken has been rated as one of the nation's most walkable and bicycle friendly cities in the country, between 2014 and 2018 there were 376 traffic-related injuries and three deaths. Hoboken's Vision Zero Action Plan will lay out strategies for each department to operationalize the five principles of the program. The program will use a data-driven approach to redesign streets to prevent speeding and accommodate bicyclists or other micromobility users.
