SAN DIEGO, CA — A ticket with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number, in Saturday evening's multi-state Powerball lottery was sold at a convenience store in San Diego and is worth $33,827, the California Lottery announced. There were six other tickets sold in California with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number. California law requires major payoffs of lottery games to be paid on a pari-mutuel basis. A ticket with all six numbers was sold in New Jersey and the ticket holder has the choice between receiving the $20 million jackpot in 30 graduated payments over 29 years or a lump sum payment of $15.4 million, the Multi-State Lottery Association, which conducts the game, announced. This was the second consecutive drawing a ticket with all six numbers has been sold following a record 35 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. The jackpot for Wednesday's drawing grew to $731.1 million, the sixth- largest in U.S. history. It was won by a person who purchased a ticket in Maryland. The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number is 1 in about 293 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 24.87. The Powerball game is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. The jackpot for Wednesday's drawing will be $20 million. City News Service
