I would like to give a shoutout to Christopher L. who is in my 8th grade English and History VLA class. Christopher self-advocates for himself in my class on a consistent basis and he has an incredible work ethic, always pushing himself to do his very best. He has the biggest heart and always is the first one to login to my zoom 5 minutes early to check in with me and see how I am doing. Christopher's positive energy is contagious and we are all so lucky to have his huge smile, and energetic sincere self in our class each day. -Ms. Werner (Core- English 8 and History 8) VLA Class Showcase Ms. Mastro's Science 7 Classes As a lead-in to our chemistry unit, my two 7th grade science classes completed a "Cooking Challenge"! Students were given 15 minutes during class to prepare food for themselves or for a family member. They then shared out a picture of the dish and their "recipe" on a Google Slide. These students will continue developing their cooking skills throughout our chemistry unit. Make sure to register in advance. Sessions are open to all NUSD families. The topics are Prevention Use and Tobacco Education (1/27), Coping skills – Emotional regulation (2/4) and Anti- Bullying Education (2/10). Galileo Assessment Middle of the Year The window for the Galileo Assessment is open for the month of January for students to take the middle of the year benchmark. Students will be instructed to take the assessments in English and math by their teachers. The data is used to see student progress towards standards and to plan instruction to best support student learning. VLA Middle School Weekly Schedule Changing as of January 4th, 2021 The schedule is linked here. And can be viewed below. Attendance will continue to be required for all 5 days of school. Since all VLA students are virtual, there is no need to divide the classes into cohorts. The live (synchronous) learning per class period is highlighted in the yellow boxes. The green boxes are times designated for independent work (asynchronous) for the classes that aren't meeting live. Please note that this time may be extended at the end of the school day as well in order to complete assignments. Your child may take a break and eat lunch during these green times as well. Clarification on the Afternoon Class Times The blue highlighted times are utilized to work in small groups or independent work for the classes that have met live earlier in the day. Students who have a grade of D or F must attend the afternoon session. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend the first 15 minutes of each afternoon session to ask questions or check in with their teacher prior to working independently. If your child is asked to attend a small group or check in during this time, attendance is required. The teachers will notify their students who should be attending live meetings in the afternoons via Google Classroom. This press release was produced by the Novato Unified School District.
