ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst aldermen on Tuesday approved the zoning for a car wash expansion that officials said would be better for the neighborhood.
Officials acknowledged residents' concerns with the project. But they said Delta Sonic Car Wash plans to take care of smell, noise and traffic management issues.
Under the changes, Delta Sonic, which is part of a chain, plans to combine three neighboring lots with its existing property at 600 W. North Ave. The car wash is near the intersection with Route 83.
The new car wash will be designed to have cars waiting on the property, rather than backing up on North Avenue, as happens now, Alderman Bob Dunn told the council. And it is expected to share one of its exits with the neighboring Burger King to give customers an alternate route.
Additionally, the prep area will be enclosed, cutting down on the smells, Dunn said. And the new building will be designed in a way to reduce noise, he said.
"The applicant did a good job in reaching out to the neighbors, not just with one token meeting. They were continually engaged with them," Dunn said.
Alderman Jacob Hill said he, along with residents, were concerned with the car wash's parking, saying it might add to problems in an already congested area.
Alderman Mark Mulliner said he didn't expect that to be a problem.
"They have assured us they will monitor the parking as far as their staff, making sure they park in the appropriate locations," Mulliner said.
The City Council unanimously approved the zoning and a conditional use permit for the car wash.
