2 Dead After Car Crashes Into Van While Fleeing Aurora Police

AURORA, IL — Two people were killed Saturday night in a crash while trying to flee from Aurora police, according to a news release. The two people, who have not been identified, were passengers in a car that police allege fled from a West Side apartment complex parking lot several minutes before the crash. Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Saturday about people with guns in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Coventry Place, the release states. Police said officers tried to pull over a white Dodge Charger after it "took off" from the parking lot but immediately ended the pursuit. 84 Coronavirus Deaths In Kane County During First 3 Weeks Of 2021 The Charger sped east on Indian Trail, ran a red light at Lake Street and then crashed into a minivan at the intersection of North Ohio Street and East Indian Trail, police said. One passenger in the Charger was pronounced dead Saturday night at the site of the crash, while a second passenger died shortly after reaching a local hospital, police said. Police allege the driver of the Dodge Charger ran away from the crash. He was found several minutes later hiding in the yard of a home nearby and taken to a hospital to be treated, police said. Police said they found several guns during an initial search of the crash, which occurred about a quarter-mile from the Aurora Police Department. APD spokesperson Paris Lewbel told Patch the department consulted with the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, which investigates officer-involved deaths for law enforcement agencies in the county. The task force determined the two deaths connected to the crash were not officer-involved deaths because police ended their pursuit and turned off East Indian Trail prior to the fatal crash, according to Lewbel. Aurora police are trained to end vehicle pursuits if "the risks to the community outweigh the apprehension of the suspects," Lewbel said.
