Abdullah Hammoud Joins Race For Dearborn Mayor

DEARBORN, MI — Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) will throw his hat in the ring and run in the Dearborn mayoral election. Hammoud, who currently serves in the Michigan House of Representatives serving Michigan's 15th District, which includes Dearborn, announced the move Monday in a post on his official Facebook page. "Our hometown needs leadership where people and community will come first," Hammoud said in a post. "With your support, we will lead with the same tenacity as we have over the past 4 years as Dearborn's State Representative. With the same heart and commitment, and with the community's best interest guiding each and every decision." Current mayor John B. O'Reilly's term runs through 2021. Hammoud is joined by Dearborn City Council President Susan Dabaja in the list of people running to replace O'Reilly. Hammoud gained some attention in December when he and a group of 35 other Michigan House legislators submitted a letter to the Detroit Lions saying they supported the hiring of San Fransisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as the Lions new head coach. Saleh, who later would be hired by the New York Jets, is a Dearborn native. In January, Hammoud joined a growing list of Michigan lawmakers who reported they had tested positive for the coronavirus. "Thankfully, I am feeling well and recovering at home," he said at the time. "In the interim, my team and I will continue to work remotely."
