Coronavirus: Wilton Health Dept. Closes Retired Nuns' Property

RIDGEFIELD. CT — The town Health Department has ordered the School Sisters of Notre Dame property and facilities closed to visitors and the public after 30 residents, in addition to staff, tested positive for the coronavirus. The property is home to over 70 retired nuns, 15 of whom recently received vaccinations asallowed under phase 1b, according to a news release from the Office of the First Selectwoman issued Sunday evening. The remaining residents and staff were scheduled to be vaccinated on Jan. 25 by Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County. The nursing home's residents and staff were not eligible to be vaccinated under phase 1a as SSND is a non-licensed facility. At the request of Wilton's health director, a Connecticut Department of Health COVID-19 response team will be assisting onsite beginning Monday. Contact tracing is ongoing by Wilton's Health Department and the health departments of communities where staff members live. The SSND are an international congregation of women religious with nearly 2,300 members who direct their ministry towards education. There is currently no evidence of related community spread within Wilton, according to the release.
