BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 21-year-old man has been identified as the person shot and killed by Birmingham police during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Titusville. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the man as Eusi Malik Kater Jr. of Birmingham. Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said just after 2 p.m. officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of 5th Avenue Southwest. When police attempted to make contact with Kater, police say he fled to a residence in the 600 block of Center Place South. Mauldin said Kater "took a tactical position on the porch" of the home and fired at officers.
