Clock Is Ticking On Milwaukee County 'Safer At Home' Order

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Now that the Wisconsin Supreme Court has struck down the state's Safer At Home order, local officials in Milwaukee say they're on the clock. On Wednesday night, the state's highest court said Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' administration overstepped their legal boundaries when crafting the order. Under the ruling, the Wisconsin Supreme Court concluded that the Safer At Home order was "unlawful, invalid and unenforceable." The court ruling was 4-3 in favor of striking down the governor's emergency order. Leaders in Milwaukee County said they want to be prepared if the statewide order gets overturned. According to a WISN-12 report, Milwaukee County officials are making plans to draw up their own Safer At Home order in the event the governor's statewide order gets overturned by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. "If we retain that authority, it would be our intention to issue an order that would be a local order," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in the report. "There have been extensive conversations that have already occurred among the 11 public health officers in Milwaukee County." County officials said they want to have all of Milwaukee County's 19 municipalities on board with the order in the event they feel it's necessary.
