RESTON, VA — An electrical event is being blamed for causing a fire Saturday at a Reston home, according to a release from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. FCFRD units responded at 5:17 p.m., for the report of a fire in the 11500 block of Greenwich Point Road. Arriving at the two-story, single-family home, firefighters found fire showing from the roof. At first, crews were able to quickly control the fire from outside the home, but they then moved inside to extinguish the blaze. Two individuals were inside the home at the time of the fire, according to the release. A neighbor spotted flames on the roof and notified the occupants, who were able to escape unharmed. Smoke alarms failed to activate due to where the fire was located. Fire investigators deemed the fire as accidental, saying that it started inside a wall on the home's second floor. They identified the cause of the fire as an electrical event. The fire displaced two occupants and assistance from Red Cross was not required. Investigators determined the fire caused an estimated $65,500 in damage.
