The Constitutionally mandated survey is launched at the start of each decade and is available until September 30, due to COVID-19 operational delays. Taking the census means that you are saying: "I am here," and "My household needs and deserves the representation and federal funding to support the quality of life in my community." Why the Census is Important Completing the 2020 Census is critical because your response: Influences decision making at state and local government levels Determines the number of representatives each state has in the U.S. Congress Ensures adequate distribution of fire, police and EMS services Affects decisions on transportation needs Impacts funding for Prince William County from federal programs such as Medicare, Medicaid Part B, highway construction, Section 8 housing vouchers, special education grants, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, Title 1 grants for local schools, the School Lunch Program, Head Start, the Women with Infants and Children Program, foster care and more. How to Complete the Census It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete the census. Every person in each household should be counted, including infants born on or before April 1. There are four ways to complete the census: Online at my2020census.gov By phone at 844.330.2020 Via U.S. Mail by returning the census questionnaire sent to your household in March or April In-person when an official Census Worker comes to your home These individuals will have a valid identification badge with their photograph and the U.S. Department of Commerce watermark on it. They will also have a letter from the Census Bureau, on official letterhead, stating the reason for their visit. A Census Worker will never ask for your social security number or bank account information. For more information visit 2020census.gov/en/census-takers. The census is available in 13 languages. There are also guides available in 59 languages and for those with special needs at 2020census.gov/ways-to-respond. The Census is Confidential The Census Bureau is legally bound to protect responses. Bureau employees are committed to privacy and obtaining a complete count of communities. If you have not done so already, please take a few minutes to complete the 2020 census before it closes on September 30. For every person not counted, our County could miss out on as much as $21,120 in federal funding over the next decade.
