WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield police said this week that on Jan. 14, a resident became the victim of a pricey form of identity theft. Police said that a resident reported that he'd found out that an unknown person used his information to lease an apartment in New York. The approximate amount for the lease of the apartment was $3,005, per month, police said. "It should be noted that the lease was signed for a year," police said, "thus making the victim liable to cover the cost for the entire 12-month lease, approximately $36,060." Police are investigating. In other police news this month: Car stolen with keys inside (and jewelry) Police said that on Jan. 12, a Mountain Avenue resident reported their vehicle stolen. The vehicle was described as a 2019 Toyota valued at approximately $25,000. It was in the driveway, unlocked and with keys inside, police said. Police said the vehicle was stolen between 10 p.m. the previous evening and 8 a.m. the morning of the report. The resident also reported that several items of value were inside the vehicle at the time of theft, to include clothing, jewelry, and vehicle car seats. The approximate value of the items stolen is over $2,500. There are no suspects. Two men caught on video trying to enter car On Jan. 16, a resident of Windsor Avenue reported an attempted burglary to her motor vehicle. She said that around 2:25 a.m., two unknown males attempted to burglarize her 2019 Toyota Highlander in the driveway. This incident was captured on video surveillance camera, which showed two suspects walking up to the vehicle and attempting to gain access by pulling on the front driver's door. But the car was locked. Car stolen from parking lot A resident of Boynton Avenue reported that her 2018 Subaru Impreza was stolen. She said that she parked the vehicle in a parking lot on Jan. 14 around 10 p.m. When she returned on Jan. 16, it was missing. She said she locked it and kept both keys. The car was worth $22,000 and contained approximately $255 worth of miscellaneous items, she said. Cars burglarized There were various reports of cars burglarized: On Jan. 12, a Hillcrest Avenue resident said someone entered his car and stole a gift card with a balance of $60. The car was unlocked.The same date, another Hillcrest Avenue resident said someone broke into his or her car and rummaged through items, but took nothing.On Jan. 13, on Terrace Place, a resident said someone entered their unlocked car in their driveway and removed 16 quarters. The resident said the theft could have occurred any time in the previous three days.On Jan. 16, a Windsor Avenue resident said someone entered their car overnight in the driveway and rummaged through it, but nothing was taken.The same date, a resident of East Grove Street said someone entered his car overnight and took a wallet with $200, credit cards, and ID. Marijuana bust On Jan. 15, Officers Gill and Donovan arrested a 32-year-old Roselle man for alleged possession of marijuana under 50 grams, pursuant to a motor vehicle stop near Park Street and Central Avenue.
