SUMMIT, NJ — After a viral photo spread around the internet Thursday of former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders looking cold and unamused in giant mittens at the presidential inauguration, various versions of the photo turned up around the internet — including on a webpage to promote Summit. Ever since Wednesday's inauguration, people have seemed amused that the Vermont senator traded fashion for comfort (as people do as they mature, particularly on the East Coast in January). Among other places, a version of the meme popped up Thursday on the Facebook page of Downtown Summit Inc., a group that promotes Summit's small businesses. The photo showed the Vermont senator sitting beside Boxwood Coffee on Beechwood Road. (See it here.) "Look who we found downtown enjoying the brisk sunshine waiting for his oat milk chai!" the post read. "Everyone loves downtown Summit. Great day for a visit see you in Summit!" The post got 188 likes and 15 shares in six hours. "Hilarious," wrote one commenter. "We certainly had fun with this today," responded Summit Downtown, which posted Bernie again in the comments section, sitting in front of a mural in town. Apparently, "Bernie" has been visiting other parts of New Jersey. Someone photoshopped the mitten photo into a beach shot of former Gov. Chris Christie, from when the ex-official-turned-Trump critic was caught there in 2017 while beaches were closed statewide. While Bernie's "visit" downtown may be, er, untrue news, here's a fact: You can find out more about Summit Downtown by clicking this website. Got news? Email [email protected]. Got photos?
