The more the weather gets colder outside the more excited I get for doing more things outside. In the midwest United States, the best part of the year for many residents is the fall and winter activities. There are so many social gatherings and fun things to do when the weather gets a little cooler than many people look forward to being outside and active. There are a small number of people who also dread it and fear social gatherings and it is for a myriad of reasons. One of those reasons are having not so great ostomy gear. I know that it sounds a little rare, but the truth is that a lot of people are more afraid of going out and being with friends and family and it is simply because of misinformation or bad gear. I want to just go over some places to get some great information and also ostomy gear so this simply does not become a reality for you. And if you know anyone who struggles with this, it may be worth giving them some information too. The first thing to know is that if you have been out of surgery for a very long time and maybe haven't gone searching for ostomy gear lately you should. The times have changed and now gear is simply really good. The best part of my journey is that I learned that even all the stuff I was told from the hospital could be updated a little bit. The fact is that technology has come a long way and information sharing has also grown. Where you had only a few sources of information in the past now you have access to millions of people and hundreds of thousands of them in your situation who can advise and give their experiences. So don't simply take the word or information from one source. Make sure to shop around! Now to me having more sources of information and learning about the best stoma gear in the industry is key. This means you need to actually go out and search, but you don't actually have to leave your home. It's 2020 and most of us have smartphones. So pop out your phone and start a google search. It may lead you down a crazy path of information, but it can also give you a whole lot of questions to start to research on your own. Now that you have a lot of questions to learn about different gear and ideas with your stoma let's find some people who think just like you. I love social media, not because it gives amazing truth and answers, but because it shows people living life. Most of us make lots of mistakes, but social media is a huge platform for people to share their successes and mistakes. This is huge to me and makes me love the ability to see others with a stoma live and work with gear that I am interested in or have. In many cases, I see things that I didn't know existed and learn a whole lot. Just don't stand still with your knowledge base. Learn all you can from all different locations and then ask your healthcare provider about it. I love getting multiple sources of tips and help. So stay safe and have fun!
