SMITHFIELD, RI — Sen. Stephen R. Archambault has publicly condemned the racist graffiti found on the Stillwater Scenic Trail in Smithfield last week. The graffiti was found and reported by Smithfield resident Kim Ziegelmayer on Jan. 15, who immediately called on local officials to speak out against the hateful act. "It's extremely upsetting and offensive to see this type of hatred in a town that prides itself on being welcoming and inclusive," said Archambault in a statement. "This type of behavior is not to be tolerated in any way and is certainly not indicative of the people of Smithfield, who I am sure join me in condemning the graffiti." "It's certainly heart-wrenching that it comes on the heels of a call for national unity from our new president," he continued. "But it's a stark reminder that hate still exists in the most unlikely places and we must stay vigilant in combating it with zero tolerance." The graffiti was painted over by town employees on Sunday, but Archambault is urging other officials who haven't yet spoken up about the incident to do so in the name of denouncing hatred and intolerance.
