Event Description This observance day commemorates the January 15, 1929, birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was a civil rights leader, minister, and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was assassinated April 4, 1968.
The federal holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in January. (Monday, January 18, 2020)
Enacted May 3, 1976, from the 1975 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 219.
