WSDOT: State Route 706 Could Remain Closed Until Mid-March

ASHFORD, WA — Work to clear State Route 706 will likely continue for several weeks as crews work to haul away a long stretch of debris and begin road repairs east of Ashford. The Washington State Department of Transportation said contractors will work seven days a week to open the road as soon as possible. WSDOT estimated SR 706 could reopen in both directions by mid-March, depending on the weather. Our emergency contractor began work yesterday and estimates it will take one week to remove the slide debris, inspect the damage and identify repairs. WSDOT said the debris field was 6 feet deep in some areas, and several large boulders fell across the road. WSDOT said that section of the project was expected to take a least one week. Once the road is clear, contractors can begin to make needed repairs along the road. The closure starts at milepost 10, and there are no detours available. WSDOT said travelers are strongly encouraged to avoid the area, which is an active work zone. Earlier in the week, transportation crews worked with Pierce County Emergency Management to organize an escorted convoy for residents in the area. WSDOT will continue to update the timeline for reopening as the project progresses.
