CHANTILLY, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is holding a public information meeting Thursday, Jan. 30 to discuss a study of potential safety and operational improvements to a nearly two-mile stretch of Route 50 between Route 28 and Stringfellow Road (Route 645). The study will aim to identify cost-effective measures that will improve safety and reduce congestion. Potential short-term improvements being studied include adding reflective traffic signal backplates; replacing and adding pavement and crosswalk markings; providing additional signage; adding pedestrian signals in the median to create a two-stage crossing; converting bus stops to bus shelters; and adding a Galesbury Lane and Lees Corner Road sidewalk connection. Accorrding to VDOT, potential mid-term improvement options under consideration include reconfiguring and modifying intersections and access management strategies for properties along the corridor. VDOT is hoping to complete the study this summer. (Virginia Department of Transportation)The meeting will be held between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at Brookfield Elementary School, 4200 Lees Corner Road, Chantilly. A short presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and VDOT staff will be available to answer questions. VDOT is inviting residents and travelers of the corridor in the study area to complete a short survey by Feb. 10.
