Description

MILFORD, CT - (From Cody-White Funeral Home) Muriel D. Grossfeld, 80, of Milford, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2021. Born on October 7, 1940 in Speedway, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Evelyn Davis. Muriel spent the majority of her lifetime as an accomplished gymnast. She was an 18 times National Champion and member of the US Olympic Team in '56, '60, and '64. After her third Olympics, Muriel retired as an athlete and began her pursuit fulfilling her longtime dream of making the US a world power in gymnastics. She went on to conduct training camps, became head coach for the US Olympic Team in '68 and '72, and even established the first private gymnastics' school for women in the US which was located here in Milford, CT. Muriel's involvement in the sport did not stop there; she judged many national championships, international competitions, and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Muriel is one of only two American women to ever compete, coach, and judge the Olympic Games. Her achievements in the world of gymnastics are too numerous to list however it is needless to say that Muriel's influence in the sport paved the way for gymnasts today. In her personal time, Muriel enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time with her many animals. She had an affinity for dachshund dogs, which she owned many throughout her life. She will be missed deeply by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Muriel leaves behind her brother, Bruce, of Apollo Beach, FL; friend, George Ward; and many friends and fellow athletes she met throughout her lifetime. A Graveside service will take place on Friday, January 22, 2021 at 9:45 a.m. at Milford Cemetery, 35 Gulf St., Milford. The family is being compassionately cared for by the staff at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT 06460. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Muriel Grossfeld Scholarship Fund at Southern Connecticut University, New Haven, CT.
