RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Nearly 5,000 new COVID-19 infections were reported Thursday in Riverside County, along with another 63 deaths, but the number of virus patients being treated in intensive care units continued dropping. The total number of coronavirus cases recorded during the pandemic rose to 255,808, compared to 251,000 on Wednesday, according to the Riverside University Health System. About two-thirds of the total cases are reported as "recovered." According to RUHS, a total of 2,739 deaths stemming from virus-related complications have been recorded. The number Wednesday was 2,676. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates, and the daily numbers can cover three- to four-week periods, sometimes longer, according to officials. COVID-positive hospitalizations countywide were at 1,529, an increase of 15 from Wednesday. That includes 335 intensive care unit patients — nine fewer than a day ago. The county's ICU patient load has been declining since Jan. 12. The state on Wednesday night lifted a restriction it had placed on a batch of Moderna vaccine doses following allergic reactions suffered by six people who received the shots in San Diego. The hold on the vaccine affected more than 300,000 doses statewide, but local health officials said none of the affected doses were being administered in Riverside County. State officials said an investigation by federal authorities found no issues with the Moderna doses, and no other allergic reactions from the affected batch were reported in any other areas of the state. County Executive Office spokeswoman Brooke Federico said a survey of vaccination providers indicate that "adverse reactions are rare" locally.
