WEST VILLAGE, NY — Lawyers representing New York University made their case Thursday in a Manhattan courtroom, arguing that a lawsuit by students looking for partial tuition refunds should get tossed out, according to Bloomberg. Students of the Lower Manhattan school are suing NYU for not lowering its price of tuition despite the number of classes taking place online since the start of the pandemic. The student plaintiffs requested that the class-action suit represent all students, parents, and graduates who think they're entitled to some sort of refund, according to Bloomberg. NYU has more than 50,000 students. "Universities have the flexibility and the freedom to make academic decisions, and courts should not second-guess or micromanage them," a lawyer for the university said in Thursday's hearing before a U.S. District judge, according to Bloomberg. NYU students argue that institutions across the country generally offer online courses at lower costs than in-person learning, meaning that they are entitled to some sort of partial tuition refund because of the virtual classes taking place since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. You can read more about the story on the Bloomberg website.
