Description

HOW TO GROW A GARDEN; A Season-long Gardening Course for Beginners is being offered for the fifth year by Kathy Huckins in Northborough. This unique, hands-on course meets at Kathy’s home gardens and greenhouse for three hours on the third Sunday of each month - starting in March and ending in September - guiding participants through an entire season of planning, seeding, tending, and harvesting their very own gardens. Often gardening courses are taught as a two- or three-session course indoors. Participants leave with lots of notes, but are basically on their own for the growing season. Later in the year, when they encounter problems or have questions, they find themselves standing alone in their gardens with no help. By mid-summer they let it all go (except for the tomatoes) and head for the beach. In this course, by meeting each month, participants can ask questions and make corrections as their gardens grow and thrive. And there is still time for the beach! The first part of each session is spent discussing garden questions and concerns that have come up, followed by Kathy presenting new information for the coming month. The second part of the session is spent in the greenhouse and garden, with hands-on examples of how to apply the month’s information. This year, COVID-19 protocols will be followed at each outdoor session. Early sessions may be held on Zoom with video demonstrations if the weather prevents meeting outdoors. This comprehensive approach gives participants the knowledge and tools necessary to grow their own garden, eat their own food and share it with friends. In addition to receiving a solid foundation in basic gardening techniques, participants develop a respect for and the ability to interpret the complex interactions between soil, plants, insects, and animals. The cost is $280. For more information or to register email Kathy Huckins or visit www.gardenerssalon.com/gardening-course. Kathy Huckins was raised on a multi-generation family dairy farm in Minnesota where she was immersed in the beauty, hard work and family life of agrarian culture. Kathy was the farmer at Stearns Farm in Framingham, a 160 member CSA, for a dozen years before retiring and focussing on her home garden and greenhouse.
