Description
We sadly have to part with our very cute Shiba Inu, due to recent the arrival of a baby, and pending arrival of another one, and fact that we cannot trust him to be gentle around the little ones (particularly when he is napping).
Our Shiba Inu Bo is 7.5 years old and one of the cutest Shiba Inus I have ever seen. Like most Shiba Inus, he is specific. Here are things that a potential owner should know:
Pros: *He is more friendly than most Shiba Inus to visitors coming into the house - he will often run up to people to greet them, especially adults. He also forms bonds quickly with people he meets more than once. *He is sweet and affectionate and relatively low maintenance, though he likes to go on walks or run around outside.
Cons: (1) He is not aggressive towards children but he is mouthy and reactive, and will growl and snap if he is disturbed on the couch. This behavior is OK for older children, who know not to harass him when he sleeps, but it's not safe for little kids. (2) He is increasingly grumpy towards other dogs. Although he used to go to dog parks, he does not tolerate most other dogs well unless he is able to establish dominance. And (3) he will bark at other dogs / squirrels when he is on walks, and he cannot be trusted to "say hi" to people when he is on his leash either.
Bo would be an ideal companion for a single person or couple without kids, who are looking for a dog that is relatively low maintenance and independent. I would prefer someone who lives in the country or suburbs and has a (very well) fenced yard or an electric fence (he is trained on this).
