HEMPSTEAD TOWN, NY — While many find themselves at home more often than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Town of Hempstead and the Long Island Nets are partnering to provide young Hempstead Towners access to a free, virtual basketball clinic. The clinic will take place via Zoom on Jan. 30 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., and will provide young athletes with the opportunity to learn and practice basketball fundamentals from the comfort and safety of their homes.
"I am incredibly excited the Town of Hempstead is joining with the Long Island Nets to transform this key facet of the township's recreation program to an at-home format," said Town Supervisor Donald Clavin. "Providing our younger residents the opportunity to stay active this winter while working on their athletic ability by improving key basketball skills in a safe and COVID-compliant manner is a great thing."
The virtual session will be led by Long Island Nets Head Clinician Kelly Dempsey and HSS Sports Safety-trained clinicians. The free program is open to children ages 6-13 who are interested in learning tips and tricks to improve their skills at home without a basketball hoop.
"The Long Island Nets are proud to work alongside our partners in the Town of Hempstead to provide youth in the local community the opportunity to safely stay active and engaged during these unprecedented times," said Alton Byrd, vice president of business operations for the Long Island Nets.
Interested participants must RSVP by registering and completing the required waiver by clicking here. After registering, participants will be provided the Zoom session login information. The deadline to register is 3 p.m. on Jan. 29. Aside from a basketball, no equipment is needed to participate in or complete the clinic drills.
