SMITHFIELD, RI — The Smithfield Town Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to pass a resolution that formally urges Gov. Gina Raimondo to ease the current COVID-19 restrictions on small businesses and allow them to return to their normal hours of operation. Although Cranston was the first Rhode Island town to introduce a similar resolution, it has not yet been voted on and Smithfield has become the first town to pass such a request. Rhode Island's safety regulations currently requires restaurants, bars, gyms, recreational facilities, and personal services to close by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and indoor and outdoor venues to run at 25% capacity. The resolution does not have the power to change COVID-19 restrictions for small businesses, but will rather pressure Raimondo to reevaluate the latest limitations and regulations.
