Volunteer to assist The Nature Conservancy's Disney Wilderness Preserve stewardship staff in protecting red-cockaded woodpecker habitat.
Help is needed to clear vegetation around trees with red-cockaded woodpecker nest cavities to help protect the nests during the upcoming prescribed fire season (intense heat from palmetto fires can damage the nest cavities). Volunteers will be led by stewardship staff to use brush cutters, loppers, rakes and other equipment to cut the vegetation and move it away from the trees. This is a tough physical job! We will be required to follow COVID-19 protocol, including keeping the group small, wearing masks, and socially distancing.
Volunteers must register to participate, bring their own water, snacks, bug and sun protection, and meet at the welcome center at 8:30am. All other equipment will be provided by The Nature Conservancy.
