Description
TAMPA, FL — Tampa police detectives are continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting of a 28-year-old man Monday night.
At 9:41 p.m., officers were called to the Bowery Bay apartment complex at 6401 S. Westshore Blvd. for a report of a man who was banging on the doors of apartments while holding something behind his back and yelling incoherently.
One of the residents reviewed surveillance video and saw that the man, identified as Jeremy D. Liwag, a resident of the apartment complex, was holding a gun behind his back.
Police arrived just after 11:30 p.m. to speak to the woman who called in the report and review the video. One officer recognized Liwag from previous encounters, and the officers went to his apartment to check on his welfare.
While the officers — one 36 years old with six years on the force and the other 39 years old with 13 years on the force — were speaking to Liwag, he raised his gun toward them, forcing the 36-year-old officer to shoot him.
The officers provided first aid until Tampa Fire Rescue transported Liwag to the hospital. Liwag was shot in the abdomen and left bicep. His injuries are not life-threatening. He remains hospitalized with charges against him pending.
The officer who fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct the primary investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
