Bayonne Man Charged With Assaulting Hoboken Police Officers

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police say that when they tried to arrest a man in a crime on Thursday afternoon, he spat at one officer and attempted to assault others, resulting in more charges. Police charged Roodberth Melon, 26, with criminal attempt burglary, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, obstructing the administration of law, resisting arrest, terroristic threats, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said that on Thursday, around 3:22 p.m., a witness reported a male had just broken the back windshield of a motor vehicle in the area of Third and Washington streets. The witness followed and supplied a description and direction of travel of the alleged person. Moments later, Officer Tyrone Huggins located the suspect in the area of First and Washington streets. The suspect was later identified as Melon. Officer Huggins approached Melon and gave him verbal commands to stop, police say. Melon did not comply and continued to walk past Huggins, police say. At that time, Det. Connor Milne arrived and also attempted to stop Melon. According to police, Melon shoved Detective Milne and took a fighting stance. Then, Huggins and Milne approached Melon to place him under arrest. Police say Melon resisted arrest with force. Lt. Keith Rotondi and Officer Brandon Fitzgibbons helped place Melon under arrest, police say. Police say that as Melon was being escorted to a radio car, Melon turned towards Det. Sgt. William Collins and "spat on his face." Melon was placed in the radio car and transported to Hoboken University Medical Center. While being escorted out of the car and into the hospital, Melon continued to resist officers and assaulted Officer Anthony Olivera, police say. Police say Melon was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. All of the charges were placed on a warrant and Melon was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, police say.
