JOLIET, IL — A 48-year-old man died Tuesday morning following a crash at Joliet's busy east side intersection of Cass and Briggs Street. The Joliet Police Department said the other driver drove through a red light, crashing into the Crete man's vehicle, leaving him dead and injuring his two passengers. Roman Romero-Velasquez of Crete was pronounced dead at Silver Cross Hospital at 10:53 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner's Office. The Joliet Police Department said Tuesday's deadly collision happened at 10:22 a.m. According to police, a 23-year-old woman was driving northbound along Briggs Street when she blew the red light at the intersection with East Cass Street, which is Route 30. The young woman's car collided with the eastbound car along Cass Street, driven by Romero-Velasquez. "The collision forced his vehicle into a pole on the northwest corner of the intersection," police said. The Crete resident was extricated from his vehicle and taken by ambulance to Silver Cross, where he was pronounced dead. Two passengers in the man's vehicle were taken to Silver Cross with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The Joliet Police Department investigation into Tuesday's deadly wreck remains ongoing.
