MICHIGAN — Michigan added 1,738 new cases of the coronavirus and 41 COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, according to state health officials. Following Tuesday's updated figures, Michigan has now reported 540,115 confirmed coronavirus cases and 13,865 deaths being attributed to COVID-19. Michigan reported 2,843 new cases of the coronavirus and 20 additional COVID-19 deaths on Monday. On Saturday, Michigan reported that more than 442,408 people in the state have recovered from the coronavirus. Michigan officials on Tuesday announced a $5.6 billion coronavirus recovery plan that includes $225 million in economic programs and $2 billion in funding for schools. The majority of that money will come from federal dollars, according to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who said the plan will focus on boosting the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and economic recovery efforts. "The most important thing that we can do to grow our economy and to help businesses get back on their feet is to protect public health and end the pandemic," Whitmer said Tuesday. Health officials in Washtenaw County on Tuesday said seven more cases of the coronavirus have been linked to a woman who visited the United Kingdom and later was found to have a new variant of COVID-19 that originated in the U.K. Susan Ringler-Cerniglia, a spokeswoman for the Washtenaw County Health Department, told Patch Tuesday that it is unknown if the associated cases are also the new variant, adding that testing is still in progress. The variant, B.1.1.7, is believed to be a more contagious virus.
