Examine a selection of authentic ship logs and sailors' journals from Maine Maritime Museum's collection.
From shipwrecks and piracy to foreign ports and the wide open sea, the experiences of those who lived and worked aboard great wooden sailing vessels have inspired some of the best fiction in American history. In this two-hour workshop we will look closely at a selection of ship logs and sailors' journals from Maine Maritime Museum's collection, using our imaginations to give these first-hand accounts new life. Coupled with the picturesque backdrop of MMM's historic shipyard and the remnants of the nation's last surviving clipper ship, Snow Squall, these journals will inspire children and adults alike to create a piece of writing based on maritime journeys long ago. Participants will have the opportunity to share their writing with the group in a positive workshop setting, receiving feedback and advise on how to take their project further. All ages are welcome--content level is appropriate for ages 5+.
