Press release from the Carlsbad Unified School District: January 18, 2021 Today we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr - a civil rights leader who manifested some of America's best values, including freedom, equality, justice, compassion, and integrity. Known as "a day on, not a day off," MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. This year, MLK Day is as important as ever. We are grappling with the challenges that a global pandemic is placing on our communities. In the midst of a public health crisis, we're needed to address these issues the only way we can – together. The 10th annual Great Kindness Challenge is right around the corner, and I am happy to once again encourage all members of our community to participate. On January 25 through 29, 2021, we'll all have the opportunity to help create a culture of kindness, unity and respect. Kids for Peace, the hosting nonprofit based right here in Carlsbad, has adapted all of their tools in response to the pandemic. As a reminder, The Great Kindness Challenge is all about students practicing kindness by completing 50 acts of kindness - and they have socially-distanced, hybrid and virtual versions of their checklists available for schools and families.
