This Monday, January 18th, MLK Day at 10:00 AM to Commemorate the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to Dedicate a Plaque Recognizing the Cemeteries' Designation in the National Register of Historic Places. The ceremony will include a libation ceremony lead by Nana Malaya Rucker to honor the ancestors and special guest singer and performing artist, Deborah Bond . Our ceremony will be followed by walkabout discussions of the history of the cemeteries and the lives and contributions of those interred. There will also be the opportunity to honor these sacred grounds by joining in some volunteer groundskeeping (bring your hand shears if you have them). The placement of the plaque in the entrance area of the Female Union Band Society Cemetery will: Convey to the public the NRHP recognition given to the Mount Zion and Female Union Band Cemeteries. Inform visitors that the “park-like” and wooded grounds before them are in fact a sacred historic burial ground for thousands of individualsProvide visitors information about the history of the cemeteries, the lives, and contributions made by the interred to the establishment of Georgetown and to the transition of the United States to a post-slavery eraThe NRHP Sign supports the Mount Zion - Female Union Band Society Cemeteries Foundation's goal of the burial grounds being a living historic memorial
