DORCHESTER COUNTY, MD — A Baltimore man has been charged with driving under the influence and other offenses after police said he stole an ambulance on the Eastern Shore. No patients or passengers were in the ambulance at the time, according to authorities. Augustus Redditt, 52, has been charged with multiple offenses, including unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; intentional false alarm; malicious destruction of property greater than $1,000; and theft greater than $100,000, court records show. Police said he was also charged with driving under the influence, drug possession and traffic offenses. The ambulance was stolen from outside the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester in Cambridge before 8:10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, according to authorities. Police said troopers found the ambulance on US 50 west in Cambridge, where Redditt had turned on the lights and sirens to try to escape but ultimately lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road and rolled over in the area of US 50 at Tarbutton Mill Road. Officials said Redditt was taken to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton, then the Maryland State Police Easton Barrack for processing upon his release. Police said the incident involving the stolen ambulance remains under investigation.
