Press release from the City of Des Moines: January 13, 2021 DES MOINES, IOWA – Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021 – The City of Des Moines will soon deliver financial relief to local restaurants hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Council members last night approved a $300,000 grant program that would reimburse Des Moines restaurants for delivery and takeout supplies through the remainder of this winter. Starting with supply charges incurred by restaurants beginning on Dec. 1, 2020, the Dine Out Des Moines Delivery Assistance program will provide up to $7,500 to local restaurants. All funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served reimbursement basis. Signup for the program will begin on Jan. 26. "Without a doubt, restaurants are a key element to the character and diversity of Des Moines and an important employer in the metro," said Development Services Director Erin Olson-Douglas. "The intent of the program is to safely stimulate business to local restaurants this winter while preserving the unique taste, flavor and creativity of De Moines restaurants." The Iowa Restaurant Association estimates that due to the coronavirus pandemic, Iowa could lose up to 60% of restaurants statewide.
