HAMDEN, CT — A 16-year-old New Haven resident has been arrested in connection with an armed carjacking early Tuesday morning in Hamden, according to police.
A 26-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint while he was warming up his vehicle around 5:50 a.m. on Helen Street in Hamden, according to police Capt. Ronald Smith.
The man told police he was warming up his vehicle when the driver of a black BMW pulled up next to him. Two men got out of the vehicle and approached him, he said.
One of the men approached the driver's side door and pointed a gun at the man while his accomplice searched the vehicle, according to Smith.
Smith said the victim's vehicle, wallet and cell phone were stolen. The man was not hurt.
"Throughout the day, members of the Hamden Police Department Detective Division, in close collaboration with the New Haven Police Department, investigated the carjacking," Smith wrote in a news release. "Officers gathered information, which led them to the residence of a New Haven juvenile.
"Further investigation revealed that the juvenile, was in fact responsible for the carjacking and that he had threatened the victim with a weapon. Evidence of the crime was located at the juvenile's residence."
The 16-year-old, whose name wasn't released because of his age, was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree larceny. The teen, who was released to his guardian, is scheduled to appear at Juvenile Court in New Haven on Jan. 25, according to Smith.
